New Times BPB
Launched in 1997 to challenge XS (now City Link), the debut issue's first cover story investigated its competitor's publisher. While that seemed a dubious strategy at first, New Times Broward-Palm Beach succeeded well enough to force XS into a name change and a new direction: away from traditional alt-weekly government investigation (where New Times excels) and more into entertainment coverage for young men (which New Times doesn't do as much). The Fort Lauderdale-based New Times, like its big brother in Miami, is owned by the Village Voice, which has 17 similar publications nationwide. It reports a weekly circulation of 70,000.

New Times can be a great place for freelancing. There's good money per word in the Calendar section and if you're decent they'll keep you around for quite some time. But, you have to match the snarky tone they are always seeking.
If you do become friends with the staff it's a fun place to work, aside from the low pay, lack of benefits for the youngest staff members and consistent negativity.
But, some amazing, award-winning writers have gotten their start there, and some amazing staff writers are still there and will talk to you about stories if you ask nicely and supply them with alcohol.
The coolest thing is that if you stick around for a few years you can jet off to one of their other papers all over the country. But, who wouldn't want to give up Fort Lauderdale and head to Nashville?
The BPB New Times is a wonderful place to work. The staff is smart, fun, and preternaturally friendly. The pay is okay, the comps are constant, and the benefits are outstanding (VVM will insure your dog). Especially under the current editor, Eric Barton, writers are largely given free reign to do the kind of work they want. Best print job I've ever had.
I love freelancing for New Times. I have absolutely nothing but great things to say about the staff. They put out a great product, and the events they throw are top notch. Good times all around.
