The Stuart News

The flagship of Treasure Coast Newspapers, The Stuart News is owned by the E.W. Scripps Company, which has lumped its four area papers under one website, tcpalm.com. Even its self-reported circulation figures are combined: The Stuart News, Vero Beach Press Journal, Port St. Lucie News and Fort Pierce Tribune report a total circulation of 106,000 daily and 118,000 on Sunday – but the company doesn't offer separate numbers for each paper.

I have to admit that the eight months I worked at The Stuart News, I had my eye on the door. It was tough, I worked hard and had one of those beats - the county - where it was difficult to find relevance in the "meeting stories" I covered. That's part of the job description, however. If you want to succeed, find the human interest for the older (50s and up) population that continues to read newsprint in this small community.
Also know that you must be part videographer, photographer, as well as reporter in the new model of reporting the News has developed.
Editors at this paper stress quantity over quality, so those who can write a few stories a day, consistently, might like this job. If you can't multi-task, or write on deadline not only for print but for the online edition, which they are also stressing more than ever, this job isn't for you.

It's a good first job that makes or breaks you. For meaty work, freelance. The reporter as all-in-one is being revisited. Few pull it off okay or well and even fewer want to.
Again, think entry level! Have a thick skin.
